Liz Hingley was the first winner of the Prix Virginia, a photography award that we have supported since the beginning. At the time, she was a young photographer. She won with her moving and intimate photo essay on an under-privileged family in the UK, The Jones Family.
Liz defines herself as an anthropologist. What she always finds the most interesting in her photographic work is the communities she shoots, their rituals and lifestyles. She lived in Shanghai for two years and quickly became interested in the social and economic development that came with the extension of the underground train system in the Chinese megacity.
The pictures in her Portraits de Villes are the fruit of a lot of research and exploration. They show the Shanghai suburbs in a fresh light.
